The first distance metric used in brogue is king's moves. A king in chess takes one step orthogonally or diagonally, and so king's move distance is how many king's moves it would take to get to your destination.

The second distance metric used in Brogue is the scent map distance metric, where your scent is placed on every tile in LOS, and it is weakened by distance by doubling the longer direction and adding the shorter direction, like follows:

The scent map is created this way to encourage monsters to take orthogonal paths toward you, making it harder to escape them, instead of diagonals.

The last distance metric in Brogue is the cost map, which is what the rogue's long distance move, allies and monsters use to determine the best path to their location. It excludes terrain that would currently block them, forces them to navigate around walls, assigns higher costs to tiles that potentially have traps/dangerous tiles, et cetera.
