A potion of life is one of the principal means of empowering your character. It has the following effects when applied:
- Increases your maximum health by 10. You begin the game with 30 health.
- Fully restores your health
- Cures the following status effects: hallucinating, confused, nauseous, slowed, weakened, poisoned, and darkness
While more maximum health is always better, you should generally wait to use a potion of life until you are close to death in order to get the most use out of it. Examining nearby monsters will tell you how close they are to killing you.
Brogue carefully controls the distribution of potions of life throughout the dungeon rather than only giving them as random loot. This attempts to ensure that you have neither too many nor too few.
You should expect to find 6.67 potions of life per seed on average (99.7% of runs get 6-9, range 6-13, median 7).[1]
